It has been aptly said that the first step towards change is awareness. The second step is acceptance. This is more true when it comes to the awareness of physiotherapy as a profession in the general public, other healthcare professionals and policy makers and the role played by physiotherapists in different settings and sectors of care.
Unless people are fully aware of the benefits of physiotherapy, it would be difficult for them to accept it as an itegral part of their wellbeing. Hence, it becomes imperative that each one of us take the responsibility on our shoulders to spread maximum awareness in our own ways at any given opportunity and become brand ambassadors of our field.
The good news is that the drive has already started and is slowly gaining momentum. Thanks to the internet, social & digital media and technology for making this possible. Recently, on Sept 8, World Physiotherapy Day was celebrated across India with a lot of fanfare. Various activities were conducted at individual, institution and organisational level by most physiotherapists.
However, one day or a few days are not going to be enough to make a lasting impact. We have to work round the clock to ensure that people recognise the imporant role of a physiotherapist in the healthcare delivery system.
In this regard, the next few months of 2018 are going to be very critical as there is a great opportunity coming our way in providing us with a platform to raise awareness. I am talking about various health days which are coming in the next few months. I have recorded a video message covering 14 different health days in the next 3 months and how each physiotherapist can use this as a platform to raise professional awareness. This video message is available on PHYSIOTIMES You Tube channel and I would request you to take a look, as this might help you in getting started in the right direction.
If there is awareness, acceptance would be a natural outcome. So let us all together work towards making physiotherapy reach every nook and corner of the country with our indomitable will and incessant efforts.
May the almighty lord bestow more power to your healing hands,
Keep healing,
Keep helping,
Keep serving.
Best wishes,
Mukesh Nayak, Director, PHYSIOTIMES
