As you may understand, research is an ocean, an ocean built by drops of thought, accumulated over a period of time, to develop into a question. The research question then if deemed eligible for testing, enters the phase of hypothesis. A hypothesis is an abstract collection of thoughts which are yet to be tested for their authenticity.
I m a physical therapist for the last 14 years, and a researcher for the last 31 years. Yes, we all are researchers, from our birth till death. We begin searching, experimenting by trial and error, we ask questions (for some we get answers; for some we get shouted at!), attempt to derive some answers, develop knowledge from those experiences and teach ourselves and others about such.
