REVIEW ARTICLE: Sports And Exercise Emergencies: An Emphasis On The Role Of Physiotherapists - DR.M. RAMPRASAD

One of the most critical components of being a sports physiotherapist is the ability to provide appropriate care to a suddenly injured or unwell athlete. Emergency situations may arise at anytime during sport events. Expedient action must be taken in order to provide the best possible care to the sport participant of emergency and/or life threatening conditions.

Need of sports emergencies in sports physiotherapy curriculum

Medical emergencies associated with sport and exercises are responsible for about 5% of the workload in the accident and emergency (A&E) department in western countries [1], however in this regard no published data exists in India. In many situations in India, sports physiotherapists encounter fresh emergencies yet training in sports emergencies is not part of the curriculum for many post graduate degrees. This practice necessitates the importance of introducing clinical hours in accident and emergency departments to tackle fresh challenges emerging in sports physiotherapy field.
