It was one fine morning of (March ,2008) when Mr. Mohammad Irfan, an ex-army man who got an early retirement from the Indian Army after sustaining severe injuries in his cervical spine region, first came to me visit me at my physiotherapy and rehabilitation centre. The accident that occurred in Kashmir in May 1993 left him 100% disabled. In terms used by us in medical profession Mr. Irfan became quadriplegic as a result of the accident and was in vegetative state when he came to visit me first. Interestingly enough being an army man he had the best of medical facilities at his disposal but all the doctors, unanimously, declared him 100% disabled and in a state that cannot be reversed. Instead of trying to treat his condition doctors recommended him for a pension under the 100% disability. And, Mr. Irfan was damned to a life of disabled.
As a result of the accident there was sublaxation of C6 over C7, the articular facet was located at C6 and C7 on the left side and lamina of C6 was found to be broken on the left side. Injuries were really fatal. He was operated upon by surgeons in an army hospital and remained there for quite some time. At the time he was discharged he had lost his memory and was not unable to move any extremity below the neck. I found that with the help of electro-therapy and exercise-therapy a lot of improvement in his condition can happen. I started his treatment and to the amazement of the doctors who were consulting him he started walking within a pan of six months. Now he can move all of his limbs. When I started his treatment there was already a lapse of seventeen years from the time he succumbed to those life threatening injuries. I still believe that if his treatment would have started earlier his condition would have been much better.
