JOURNAL SCAN: Critical Appraisal of a RCT by K.Khayambashi ET AL- Gourav Banerjee

Objective: Does isolated hip abductor and external rotator strengthening exercises improve pain, health status, and hip strength in females with PFP? Study Design: A randomized controlled trial.Participants: 28 female participants who had bilateral PFP for at least 6 months and had never received PT were randomized into intervention and control groups.Intervention: The experiment group received 20 minutes of bilateral hip strengthening exercises 3 (times/week) x 8 weeks along with 5 minutes warm-up and 5 minutes cool down exercises. While the control group received placebo treatment (tablets of Omega-3 and Calcium) throughout the 8 weeks intervention. The standardized intervention protocol consisted of resistance and repetitions progressed at 2 week intervals. Isolated hip strengthening exercise was performed in standing position using Thera-Band elastic tubing tied just superior to the ankle and the other end tied at a rigid pole. Anti-inflammatory and pain killers available OTC were permitted in both groups.
