In Conversation with Alfia Pathan Nagpur’s First Female Boxer To Play International Matches by Anubha Singhai

Since her venture into boxing in 2017, has won a bevvy of medals including, two golds, two silvers and a bronze medal in national tournaments.

Reigning youth world champions Alfiya Pathan produced sensational performance to win gold medal at the inaugural edition of the Elorda Boxing Cup in Nur-Sultan, 
Kazakhstan.

PHYSIOTIMES Women’s Day special edition, we talked to ALFIA regarding her experience with Physiotherapy

Boxing was traditionally considered a sport for men, but the scenario has changed off late. More women are coming forward and taking up the sports. What has led to this change? 

Boxing was consider as a men’s sport and now it has been changed as more women are coming, and we can say that women are not only back at any field, in education, sports, home making and they are successful and can do  anything that they want to

What is the best thing about Boxing as a sport?

For me boxing is a place where u find peace, satisfaction after every session,  and a place to make my dreams true

What qualities should one possess for being a good boxer?

Dedication, hard work, passion, mindset are the qualities I think are very important.

Are Indian boxers at par with their international counter parts in skills and training? If not, what are we lacking and how can we improve the scenario? 

India has been improved a lot as we can see Mary Kom and Nikkhat, Zareen who have made India proud. so, we have a lot of potential to do wonders.

Boxing can be strenuous, both on the body and mind too, how do you strike mind-body balance and keep yourself alert on the ring?

We may have mental/ Physical stress but we need to focus in the ring and our training teaches us that.

How many hours of practice do you put in?

I practice almost 5 hrs a day

What is your ‘diet regimen’ during training and tournaments?

Yes diet matters a lot during our tournament and doing training period. 

While there would be many great moments in your boxing career, which was the most overwhelming one so far?

The most overwhelming moment was we i become a world champion the best best moment  of my life.

How did you come to know about physiotherapy as a field and its benefits to you as a player?

I came to know about physiotherapy when I was selected in India camp when I was a junior  , most of the non players are not aware that It is also a great field  where with the help of Physios you can recover your injuries and improve your game.

What role has physiotherapy played in helping you manage your injuries and maintain your fitness levels? 

Boxing is a sport where you gets injuries and which has to get recovered so that you can move forward and it plays an important role in a sportsperson life.
