Physiotherapy has been widely accepted as an integral part of health care. Like other health care professions the metamorphosis of Physiotherapy education in the recent past has lead to an extent that some of the universities are offering Doctor of Philosophy in Physiotherapy. Physiotherapy was introduced to India in the year 1947 with a first physiotherapy setup established in Mumbai by Mrs Fatima Ismail. In 1953 the Physiotherapy school was started by Mr Jacques with the support of WHO at King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEM) Mumbai with 10 students. This school offered 2 years Diploma Programme in Physiotherapy. Followed by this another school began to function at the Government General Hospital, Chennai. In the academic year 1975 – 76 the degree programme in physiotherapy was introduced for the first time, with 3 years of duration. Currently, about 260 institutes in India offer entry level degree course. Up to our knowledge 5.5 to 6 thousand graduates are completing their entry level physiotherapy programme every year. At present the duration of entry level physiotherapy programme is 4 years and 6 months.
