EXPERT OPINION: Electromyography In Understanding Motor Function, Learning And Motor Control - DR. M.G. MOKASHI

PHYSIOTIMES intended that Prof. Manik Shahani the first Professor in  Physiotherapy of India,  would author a leading article as a part of his life-time interest in electro-physiology, which did not materialize. We, at Physiotherapy Dept. of AIIPMR Mumbai, were one of the earliest groups in India, to be familiar with EMG as early in 1964. It was broad vision of the founder-Director, and pioneer in medical rehabilitation in India, late Dr. M V Sant.

Rather than updating the readers, I propose to back-date them on work of some pioneers, without apologies! They were great scientists as well as thinkers. With advance in technology, newer generations of equipment are recruited. Computerization has revolutionized the technology. Yet thought process is the same. We can not dare to even think that our mentation is any better than that of professional ancestors! It is that thought process of those intellectual giants, we may capture here; and not the tools, necessarily. More refined the mind, pointed is thinking and simpler the expression. Today trend is to search, may be 5 years back. So a reader is likely to misconceive that everything has developed just a few years ago! This is in gross injustice to those pioneering geniuses. I have touched some advances, as necessary. I do not propose to fill up article by references. For updates, we have other articles to round up.
