SPECIAL ARTICLE: A PT'S Dilemma-To Rx Or Not To Rx - SUBHANJAN DAS

Why should a physiotherapist prescribe medication?- Answer to this question depends on the perspective. A physiotherapist working as a part of a complete rehab team certainly has other team members to fall back to as far as medications are concerned. On the other hand many of the PTs running solo practice often feel the need to prescribe certain medications along with the core physiotherapeutic treatment that they administer, especially for the self-referred patient. Of course the existing option is to send the client to a medico for a consultation but allowing the physiotherapist to advise certain medications (in the absence of other more compelling reasons to see the doc) would save both patient’s and doctor’s resources and improve overall efficiency. This is the core reason why UK has granted prescription power to their physiotherapists. It has been reported that certain Indian physiotherapists do advise prescription medicines to their patients1, which is illegal and must be condemned.
